Everyday Homemaking- Everyday Cooking Review

September 5, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Schoolhouse Review Crew, I received Everyday Homemaking’s Everyday Cooking ebook. This review is part of The Molly Crew. The Molly Crew provides product reviews for your home and family.

Everyday Cooking is a collection of tried-and-true recipes for simple, everyday cooking with an emphasis on whole foods. Vickie Bentley is a busy homeschooling mother of eight. She knows what it’s like trying to take care of a family and put tasty, nutritious food on the table every day. Everyday Cooking also has plenty of hints and tips to help you.

I didn’t print out the ebook, I used it straight from my computer. Check out my tip for cooking with the computer. Everyday Cooking will make a nice cookbook when printed out. I very well may do so in the future, especially as my daughters start making more and more recipes from it.

Chapters included in the cookbook are:

Timesaving Tips
Breakfast Ideas
Appetizers and Dressings
Breads and Grains
Main Dishes & Soups & Sides
Deserts & Snacks
Basic Measurements and Helps
Meal Planning and Shopping Hints
Basic Cooking Skills Checklist
Sample Menus and Menu Planning Masters
Basic Kitchen Accessories
Kitchen Equipment
and more…

The only thing I didn’t like was quite a few recipes called for instant rice. I never use instant rice. I try to use brown rice most of the time, but my husband prefers white rice. So I make that about half the time for him. Other than that, I didn’t have any problems with any of the recipes. There are a lot of recipes that I want to try. I also found quite a few recipes that I’ve seen before online. It does make it handy, though, to have them all included in this cookbook.

Here are a few of the recipes I tried:

Italian Chicken and Rice This recipe was one that called for instant rice. With a simple adjustment, I served it with brown rice and green beans from our garden.

Italian Chicken

Hamburger Gravy – served over our homemade biscuits, it was a lunch that the kids loved. My mother used to make something similar when I was growing up, only the gravy was milk based. It’s nice to have a non dairy version.

Hamburger Gravy

Chicken Taco Rice Ok, that’s not chicken, it’s hamburger. That would be user error. I guess I was thinking “tacos” when I pulled the hamburger out of the freezer. It was already defrosted when I realized my error, so I just went with it. This picture was taken before the cheese was added on the top. Chicken or beef, this is a recipe that my family loved. Next time, I will use chicken and try serving it on a bed of lettuce with diced onion and sour cream on top. yum!

Taco Rice

Italian Chicken and Pasta was another winner for my family. I served it with zucchini from our garden and it was delish.  This will definitely be a regular on our menu.

Italian Chicken with Pasta

I haven’t tried any of the desert or bread recipes yet. I went straight for the main courses. Those are the recipes that make the biggest difference in cooking for my family. I know my daughters will love to try all the desert recipes.

You can view sample pages , 12 in all, including the table of contents. Under the picture of the book, click “Preview” . Everyday Homemaking is a great cookbook and kitchen help for young and old alike. With all the extra helps included, it would also make a great addition to a home ec course.

Everyday Homemaking is a 100 page coil bound print book selling for $17.99, $14.99 in eBook form.

Handling Kid’s Gloves

January 19, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I have 6 kids ranging in age from 25 down to 11. Imagine if you will, the number of gloves and mittens we’ve gone through over the years.

The number of gloves and mittens used and lost just boggles my mind. They aren’t cheap, either!

It finally snowed here last week for the first time this winter. My poor kids had to play outside in mismatched gloves. I felt sorry enough for them, that we bought new ones. lol We tried to buy them at a store in town. Well, you know how that goes. Try to buy the clothing item you need in season and the stores just laugh at you. Who buys gloves in January? Isn’t everyone buying bathing suits?!

So I resorted to shopping online. I found some gloves on clearance at a big box store online (not the one that starts with a W, but the one that starts with a K). The boys gloves I bought were only 3 dollars and change each, and they are a name brand, too.

Kid Gloves

Now here’s the brilliant part! For my 4 kids, I bought 8 pairs, in 2 different sizes of the same design!

All the gloves can go in one basket and they can just grab two out. Lose a glove? Well, there are more just like it!

So, what do you think my chances are of having any of these gloves still here next winter?!

Making a Home

August 15, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

MakingaHome

We had a very busy week last week with relatives visiting from Massachusetts, Ohio and Florida. There was 22 of us all together.  Most of the guests slept next door at my in laws. I helped with meal planning and cooking. That’s a lot of cooking!

The garden has been still steadily providing us with lots of nice veggies. You can see some pictures at Saturday on the Farm.

Today was our first day back to school. I shared pictures of our schoolroom the other day in Our Homeschool Week in Review, if you missed them.

We had a lot of ripe bananas, so I made 4 loaves of banana bread today. 2 Gluten Free Banana Bread for me, and 2 Cinnamon Apple Banana breads for everyone else, linked below. Yummy!

What did you do last week to make your house a home?

Modest Bathing Suits

July 14, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Modest bathing suits are so hard to find. I’m not just talking for us ladies. I’m talking about girls and teenagers, also. You can order them online, but at an average price of $75, if you need more than one, it’s cost prohibitive.

My 15 yo, Hannah, won an e-book last year on how to make your own modest bathing suit.  I bought her the fabric from Spandex House. I was pleased with their service. And the colors on the fabric she picked were well represented in the picture online. It was $10 a yard and we bought 4 yards. Add in a little elastic and thread and she got a nice, 4 piece modest bathing suit for around $50. including shipping. She did pretty much use all 4 yards of the fabric.  Even though she’s not experienced in drafting her own patterns, the e-book walked her right through it.

She made 4 pieces. An undergarment, a top, shorts and a full circle skirt.

She even made a matching wide headband. 🙂

She did an awesome job with no help from me! You can read her post about sewing her own bathing suit over at her blog Daughter of YHVH.

Once a Month Cleaning Update

July 1, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I mentioned back in May about being interested in once a month housecleaning. Well, I’m back with a report.

I started out going only two weeks between cleanings. By cleaning, I mean the list of weekly cleaning chores, such as mopping, dusting, wiping down cabinets, etc. Not the daily chores.

After doing bi-weekly cleaning a couple of times, I tried going the full month. I really love it!

The most obvious clue that I was going longer between cleanings was dust. Which, by the way, I use the crochet dust mitt I made. It works great!

So, like I was saying, it really wasn’t that obvious that I was going longer between cleanings. Really, what makes or breaks a cleaning schedule is the daily work.

If I see that someone got something on the cabinet in the kitchen, I wipe it while I’m wiping the counters off. If I see that someone let the bathroom sink dirty, I rinse it out when I’m there. It’s those sort of things that make a difference in your cleaning, regardless of your cleaning schedule.

Will I continue once a month cleaning? Yes! It frees up an hour or two every week that I can spend on other tasks. But yet, it doesn’t take any longer to clean on cleaning day!

Although, I will vary the cleaning schedule according to our family happenings. We’re having company at the end of this month, so it makes sense to wait and clean right before they get here. If it works out better for us and our schedule to do a 3 week schedule, I will be flexible.

So what do you think? Do you think a monthly cleaning schedule would work for your family?

Once a Month House Cleaning?

May 20, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Have you read any of these articles about once a month house cleaning?

The Case for Once a Month Cleaning – Part One

How to Clean Your House Once a Month – Part Two

A Day in the Life of a Once a Month Cleaner – Part Three

They definitely have my attention!

Since I’m still not feeling up to par most days, could I really skip most weekly cleaning tasks? It sure would be nice to be able to put my energy into other projects that need to be done besides cleaning.

So, I’m going to try this!

Well, actually, I’m going to ease into it by trying bi-weekly cleaning. Since we’re having company the last Friday of this month, I don’t want to subject them to my cleaning experiment.

No weekly cleaning for me this week. Yea!  I spent my time and energy working in the garden instead.  🙂

So what do you think? Would you try monthly cleaning?
