Saturday on the Farm

May 15, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Saturday on the Farm

We got some more things planted in the garden this week. The spinach, lettuces, peas, green beans and onions are up and growing. We had 2 tomato plants given to us, and D bought some more. He also bought 12 bell pepper plants, and so many cabbage plants that I lost count. It was over 20. Guess we won’t run out of cabbage, good thing I can freeze it!

You can see the cardboard that we have spread out on the end of the garden. This is where we plant all the squashes, melons and other plants that take up a lot of room. We will cut holes in the cardboard to plant. The cardboard stops all the weeds. You can also use newspapers and hay. We’ve done that before and it works well.

The iris’s are blooming in the flower garden on the end of the house. This kind only blooms once. You can barely see them, but there are purple iris’s among the yellow ones. Just ignore the weeds. 🙂

I found an awesome website the other day you might like, Organic Gardening and Homesteading. I found so much useful information there. This site has a wealth of information for everyone.

Ok, it’s time for the Saturday on the Farm Carnival!

To participate, just write a post about your homestead, farm, farmette, or the tomato plant on your deck. Your cows, goats, chicken, or your favorite kitty cat.

In your post, include a link back to me. Then enter your link below.

It’s that easy! Hope to see your link below!

Crocheted Dust Mitt

May 13, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, that I was going to make a Crocheted Dust Mitt.

Well, I finished it, and I love it! Here’s the top of the mitt.

I don’t use furniture spray when I dust, I normally just use a damp cloth. But when I saw the pattern for the Crocheted Dust Mitt I knew I wanted to make one.

This is the bottom of the mitt, the dusting side, laying flat.

Crocheted Dust Mitt

I find it very easy to use on all surfaces, from flat surfaces to computer keyboards to house plants. Now, it doesn’t get all the way down in between the keys on the keyboard, but it does get partway.

Here’s the mitt all fluffed up:

It collected the dust without using any spray or evening dampening it. I take it outside when I can see a lot of dust on it, and give it a good shake. I imagine after a few weeks, it will need to be washed. In which case, I will through it in the washer with the towels and line dry it. You could put it in the dryer, but I line dry everything.

I’m glad I made this, even though attaching all those little pieces of yarn was tedious.

W.W.W. Wednesdays

May 13, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

* What are you currently reading? – Presenting Miss Jane Austen by May Lamberton Beeker This is a biography of the novelist Jane Austen. I’m a few chapters in and it’s quite interesting. The book has some lovely drawings. It’s intended for children also, it says ages 12 and up on the back.

* What did you recently finish reading? – Radical by David Platt This was such an awesome book. One that I highly recommend. My complete review of the book can be seen here.

* What do you think you’ll read next? – Praying God’s Word by Beth Moore is still on my list to read. I might start it before I finish my current read. I usually have a couple of books going at once.

Listen

May 12, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This was in our church bulletin last year sometime. I’ve had it hanging on my bulletin board since then. You may wish to make note of these “hearing aids” to help you get more from your Pastor’s message.

Listen –

Reverently – Habakkuk 2:20

But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

Expectantly – Psalm 62:5

My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

Prayerfully – 1 Samuel 3:10

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for they servant heareth.

Attentively – Acts 15:12

Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

Understandingly – Nehemiah 8:8

So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

Discerningly – Acts 17:11

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Obediently – Matthew 7:24-27

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

And everyone one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

And the ran descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Storing Fresh Beets

May 11, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I’ve been eating raw grated beets on my salads for a few months now. When I can find them in the stores, that is. I love them! I’m glad the lady at the health food store suggested them to me, as I probably wouldn’t have tried raw beets on my own, even though I like cooked beets.

My problem was getting them to last. I no sooner put them in the fridge and the would go soft. I tried cutting the greens off and leaving them on. It always produced the same results, soft beets, in just 1 days time.

So this week, when my husband came home from grocery shopping with 2 bunches of beets for me, I tried leaving them out on the counter.

These beets have been laying on the counter since Saturday afternoon. So that’s 4 days. They are not soft, and the greens haven’t gone bad. You can eat the greens by the way, I just haven’t tried them yet. The rabbits and chickens love them, though!

So that’s my kitchen tip. Leave your fresh beets on the counter, instead of putting them in the fridge. I think I’ll make sure and leave at least one out for a week and see how it does. I might even try it for 2 weeks, as we can’t buy them weekly at our stores.

What’s For Dinner?

May 10, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I tried 3 new reicpes last week from Homestead Momma. We liked every one of them! The Crockpot Cabbage Unrolls were great. I used hamburger, instead of turkey, because that’s what I had. The apple cider vinegar does have a distinctive flavor, so if your family doesn’t like acv, then you should leave it out of this recipe, as you can taste it. I will make this again, as the family loved it, acv and all.

The Cream Cheese Crockpot Chicken was absolutely delicious! I served it on homemade tortillas with grated cheddar cheese. Everyone loved it. I will definitely be making this again.

For our Friday Night Fire, I tried her Sweet Asian Slaw. It was easy to make and so delicious. There were a couple of kids who didn’t like it. But I’m not sure they even tried it! The next time I make it, I want to try adding some grated carrots. I think they would be good in it.

Now for this weeks menu:

Saturday – beef – Husband brought home Pizza for Pizza and a movie night

Sunday – sandwich day – Dinner out for Mothers Day

Monday – chicken – salad with chicken, hard boiled eggs and cheese

Tuesday – beef – meatloaf, baked potatoes, green beans

Wednesday – leftovers – with salad, if no left overs, we’ll have Jag.

Thursday – chicken – chicken pasta salad

Friday – Friday Night Fire – hamburgers, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, macaroni salad, and probably something else

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
